Overview

Ebrahiem Abrahams is a partner in our Cape Town office and a member of our Employment and Benefits practice.

Ebrahiem specialises in public sector employment law and has considerable experience in both local and provincial government issues, having advised on various restructuring projects; chaired and initiated disciplinary hearings on their behalf; and conducted investigations into allegations of misconduct.

Ebrahiem also has extensive experience in the higher education sector. He acts for three of the universities in Cape Town. Currently a major part of his work at these universities has focused on the insourcing of services and advising on related employment issues.

Ebrahiem has experience in all aspects of labour law. He is both a seasoned litigator and well versed in work of a transactional nature. He regularly appears in the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), Bargaining Councils and the Labour Court. He has been involved in high level investigations related to financial irregularities, sexual harassment and claims of racism.

Ebrahiem is also an ex-teacher and these skills have been used in providing training to parties on all aspects of labour law. He regularly facilitates seminars that are tailored to a client’s specific needs.

Ebrahiem is the President of the Western Cape chapter of SASLAW (South African Society of Labour Law) and a national director of SASLAW’s NPC that administers pro bono work at all the Labour Courts in the country.

Ebrahiem obtained his LLB degree from the University of the Western Cape (UWC) (summa cum laude). He also holds a BA degree and Higher Diploma in Education (HDE) from UWC. He has ten years post-articles experience as a labour lawyer.

Relevant Experience

  • Ebrahiem has extensive experience in the drafting of contracts, policies, disciplinary codes and other employment related documents for various corporate clients. This included the research and drafting of an Industrial Relations Manual for a major insurance client in 6 African countries. He has also conducted many due diligence exercises, climate surveys and policy reviews.
  • Ebrahiem has over the past 7 years acted for the University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University and as of 2016, also for the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. He has extensive insights and knowledge of issues affecting tertiary institutions. He was a part of the legal team advising the three universities on insourcing of services and continues to do so. His practical advice has been greatly appreciated by these clients.
  • Ebrahiem has a keen interest and extensive knowledge of Health and Safety issues. He has conducted investigations into workplace accidents where there have been fatalities, advised employers on their health and safety obligations and been involved in safety audits. In 2010 he advised the City of Cape Town on the health and safety implications of contracting with volunteers for the FIFA World Cup 2010.
