Matthew Purchase is a partner in our Governance, Compliance & Investigations Practice.
Matthew Purchase obtained B.Com and LLB degrees from the University of Stellenbosch and was admitted as an attorney in 2000. In addition, Matthew is a Certified Fraud Examiner and is a member of both the American and South African Chapters of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE). Matthew was elected as a director and executive committee member of the South African ACFE in 2010/2011, 2011/2012 and 2012/2013. Matthew is also a member of the Lex Mundi Business Crimes and Compliance Work Group.
Matthew is an admitted attorney with right of appearance in the High Court in South Africa. Matthew has previously represented clients in proceedings in the High Court and Constitutional Court in South Africa and has 14 years’ experience in conducting forensic investigations.
Matthew is the author of the South African chapter of the annual International Investigations Review Publication. Matthew is regularly invited to speak at conferences and in the media as an expert on corporate crime and investigations. Most recently, Matthew delivered a presentation on “Mitigating Corruption Risk in Cross Border Transactions” in October 2014 at the 7th Annual ACFE Africa Conference, and participated as an expert on African corruption issues during a panel discussion at the American Bar Association, International Section Spring Meeting in Washington in April 2015.
Matthew specialises in anti-bribery and corruption compliance (ABAC) matters involving the FCPA, UK Bribery Act and domestic corruption legislation. He has advised large multinational clients on ABAC issues and investigations in numerous African jurisdictions including South Africa, Nigeria, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He recently advised Marriott Hotels on its acquisition of 117 hotels across eight African jurisdictions.
Matthew routinely conducts complex internal governance, compliance and fraud investigations for listed companies and large multinationals. He also advises clients on aspects of compliance, prevention, detection and enforcement.
