Matthew Purchase is a partner in our Dispute Resolution Department and a member of the Corporate Investigations Practice.
Matthew has over 14 years’ experience in conducting forensic investigations.
Matthew has conducted numerous investigations in the public sector. He regularly provides corruption due diligence and fraud risk analyses, assisting clients in identifying corruption and corporate criminal liability risks as well as system control weaknesses and compliance issues. Matthew has assisted large multinational clients in performing corruption reviews in other African jurisdictions including Zambia, Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He also provides advice to clients concerning the applicable legislative regime in South Africa and other jurisdictions, including international conventions to which South Africa is a party, as well as foreign legislation impacting local businesses.
Matthew has designed numerous training programmes and has provided extensive fraud prevention and awareness training, compliance and dawn raid training to public and private sector clients both inside and outside of South Africa. Matthew has also conducted training on behalf of clients in Namibia and Tanzania, including members of the Tanzanian Anti-Corruption Commission. He has written a number of articles that have been published in the local press and in business reports and has also contributed to international periodicals. Matthew is the author of the South African Chapter of the International Investigations Review Publication.
Matthew has broad legal and forensic experience and has conducted complex forensic investigations for listed companies and large multinationals. He routinely advises clients on all aspects of compliance and white-collar crime including, the prevention, detection and investigation thereof as well as dealing with the civil and criminal consequences of commercial crime. Clients also seek Matthew’s advice on the implementation of specific fraud prevention measures and the development of fraud prevention plans. Matthew has extensive corporate and commercial litigation experience and is admitted to appear in the High Court.
Matthew obtained BCom and LLB degrees from the University of Stellenbosch and was admitted as an attorney in 2000. In addition, Matthew is a Certified Fraud Examiner and is a member of both the American and South African Chapters of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (“ACFE”). Matthew was elected as a director and executive committee member of the South African ACFE in 2010/2011, 2011/2012 and 2012/2013
