Overview

Richard Bryce is a senior associate in our Johannesburg office’s Corporate Department and a member of the Competition practice.  He has worked in both our Kenya and Tanzania offices. 

Richard specialises in various aspects of competition law including merger and behavioural matters and has experience across a number of industries, including the chemical industry, transport industry (air and sea), packaging industry, tobacco industry, airline industry, food and beverage industry, various sectors of the advertising industry (including marketing, merchandising and communications), information technology industry, mining industry and the agriculture industry.  

He has assisted clients with hostile mergers, with cross-border mergers that require notification to the Competition Commission of South Africa and regulators in other African jurisdictions, including, the COMESA Competition Commission, and the Competition Authority of Kenya, and has appeared on behalf of clients before the Competition Tribunal of South Africa. 

Richard is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa.  He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Cape Town, a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Cape Town, and a Master of Laws degree (with a specialisation in commercial law) from the University of Cape Town.  While completing his studies, Richard was a member of the Golden Key Honour Society.

He is a Mandela Rhodes scholar (UCT & SA, 2016) and an Allan Gray Orbis Foundation fellow.

Relevant Experience

  • Assisted BSA International S.A. in its acquisition of the Infant Nutrition Business of Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Limited with merger notifications to the COMESA Competition Commission, Competition Authority of Kenya, the Competition Commission of Namibia and the Competition Commission of South Africa.
  • Assisted Melrose Industries plc, from a South African competition law perspective, in its acquisition of GKN plc, a transaction notified as a hostile merger.
  • Assisted Blackstone Management Partners LLC, from a South African competition law perspective, in its acquisition of the Financial and Risk Division of Thomson Reuters Corporation.
  • Assisted KKR & Co. L.P., from a South African competition law perspective, in its acquisition of BMC Software Inc.
  • Assisted Anheuser-Busch InBev with the sale of its Zambian maheu business to Fairy Bottling Zambia Ltd., a transaction approved by the Zambian Competition & Consumer Protection Commission.
  • Representing clients in investigations before the competition authorities in South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania.
