Leading African law firm, Bowmans’ excellence in advising on corporate transactional and finance matters across the continent has again been highlighted in the IFLR Africa Awards published earlier today (25 August).

Bowmans received a total of six prestigious awards, three of which were M&A related including the coveted overall M&A Team of The Year award and the M&A Firm of the Year: South Africa award. The firm was also involved in the deal named M&A Deal of the Year, advising Ardagh Glass on its acquisition of Consol along with its alliance firms Aman and Partners LLP in Ethiopia and Udo Udoma & Belo-Osagie in Nigeria.

Bowmans also received the awards for:

  • Jurisdictional Firm of the Year: South Africa
  • Loans Firm of the Year: South Africa
  • Project Finance Firm of the Year: South Africa

Bowmans chairman and senior partner Ezra Davids says, ‘These recognitions are particularly gratifying because they focus solely on innovative cross-border matters.’

According to IFLR1000, in selecting the winners, it looks for ‘new legal structures, deals that overcome new regulatory hurdles and regional firsts that adapt existing technology to local regulation’. The organisation assesses the ‘intricacy of that innovation… as well as its likely market impact’ and the role of the individual law firm on the deal.

Davids says, ‘We were privileged to advise on a number of exceptional matters in the last year. The calibre of the clients we act for and the size and complexity of the matters they entrust us with is testament to the world-class service that we offer. These recognitions are a credit to our lawyers and other colleagues. We are very proud of the work that we have done.’

IFLR1000 has also been publishing its practice rankings results for 2022/2023 over the past four months, with the final categories released today (25 August). According to the results, 20 practices across Bowmans’ geographical footprint, were ranked with nine rated in the top tier:

  • Kenya in Banking and Finance, Mergers and Acquisitions, and Project Development: Mining;
  • South Africa in Capital Markets: Debt, Capital Markets: Equity, Mergers and Acquisitions, and Project Development: Energy; and
  • Uganda in Financial and Corporate, and Project Development.

Davids concludes, ‘It is always a great affirmation when the talent of our team is endorsed by an independent, international rating publication. We congratulate all the practices and lawyers who have been recognised.’
