The private equity prowess of pan-African law firm Bowmans has earned it recognition for advising on Rockwood Fund I’s disposal of Tsebo Holdings, the transaction that won the firm Private Equity Africa’s Single Deal Advisor (Legal) Award for 2017. The announcement was made at the Private Equity Africa Awards gala dinner held in London on 1 June 2017. Bowmans was also crowned Local Legal Advisor of the Year 2017 as African firms were differentiated from global legal firms.

The gala dinner is held in partnership with the London Business School Institute of Private Equity, under the leadership of Professor Francesca Cornelli. Awards are adjudicated by an independent panel of judges made up of leading global private equity experts.

The awards reinforce Bowmans’ position as Leading Legal Adviser in Africa, as recognised by Dealmakers for the past three consecutive years and their 2017 Chambers Global rankings which rated Bowmans Band 1 in 12 practice areas. Legal 500 also rated seven Bowmans practice areas in Tier 1 in its 2017 Europe, Middle East and Africa rankings.

Bowmans concluded 22 African private equity deals collectively worth over USD 900 million in 2016, of which eight were shortlisted for awards by Private Equity Africa. Being selected to work on the continent’s top deals reinforces Bowmans’ reputation as a law firm of choice for complex African transactions and highlights its ability, through its six African offices and strong relationships with other African law firms, to lead and manage transactions across multiple jurisdictions

“The recognition Bowmans received at the Private Equity Africa Awards 2017 is testimony of the strength and depth of our private equity practice and of the support we offer our private equity clients across a wide range of practices and offices. We are convinced that private equity is poised to be a major driver of growth in Africa and are committed to serving our clients wherever they do business on the continent,” says John Bellew, head of Private Equity at the firm.

Robert Legh, Bowmans’ chairman and senior partner, comments that “these awards are a vote of confidence in Bowmans’ ability to advise on complex, cross-border transactions in the best interests of our clients and of the success our ‘one firm’ approach to doing business in Africa.”
