Advised Pikitup, a City of Johannesburg municipal entity responsible for waste management, through a prolonged unprotected strike by some 4000 employees.  Striking workers overturned bins in the City Centre, and the streets were littered with waste for several weeks.  Initially, and on 24 November 2015, we secured an interim order of the Labour Court declaring the strike unprotected and ordering workers to return to work. The order was subsequently confirmed.

When this failed to end the strike disciplinary charges were formulated against striking workers, in three categories of misconduct, and we initiated and ran a mass collective disciplinary hearing.  We represented the client in the hearing.

In addition, and in light of the disregard for orders of the Labour Court, we successfully represented the client in contempt of court proceedings against their union, the South African Municipal Workers' Union ('SAMWU') and its General Secretary.
